    • Dr. Lucian (Lucas) Van Tienhoven

"Luijkas Van Thienhoven, M.D." by Mrs. Emily Steelman Fisher. In NGSQ, vols. 1-85, 1600s to 1900s. [CD] v. 7, p. 45: Dr. Van Thienhoven made a will April 5, 1706. He died 1714 and the will was probated April 30, 1714, Liber 8, p. 149.
In his will, he makes mention of his wife, two sons, and five daughters, also two granddaughters, daughters of Johannes Dumsiteene and dau. Rachel, to who he leaves eighty (80) pounds. He makes wife, son Nicholas, brother-in-law Adrian Mann, and Kinsman William Huddlestone executors, "With full power to sell."

New York City Wills, 1708-1728. [7/9/1999; Ancestry.com online database] Luycas Van Thienhoven. "In the name of God, Amen, the 15 April, 1706. I, Luycas Van Thienhoven, of New York, surgeon, being weak in body. I leave to my son, Nicholas Van Thienhoven, all that my house and lot, situate, and being in the city of new York, fronting to Dock street, bounded west by house and ground of Angeltie Burgers, north by Hendrick Ten Broeck, east by Christopher Beekman, south by the street. And he is to pay to my five daughters, Susanah, Cornelia, Sara, and Elizabeth, and the two daughters of Johanes Dumarteene (begotten of the body of my daughter Rachel) £80. I leave to my son Cornelius Van Thienhoven, my house fronting to Smith street, in which I now dwell, with the lot of land on which it stands, being 28 feet in front, and in length half the distance to King street. I leave to my daughter Elizabeth a lot next south of the lot given to my son Cornelius, 24 feet wide and same length. I leave to my daughter Cornelia a lot next south of the above, and of same dimensions. I leave to my daughter Sarah a lot of the same dimensions on the south side of the lot of Phillip Daillie. My wife Katharine is to have the use of all estate during her life. After payment of debts all the rest to children. I make my wife and son Nicholas, and my brother in law, Adrian Man, and my kinsman, William Huddlestone, executors, with full power to sell."
(Note.-- Luycas Van Thienhoven, was son of Cornelius Van Thienhoven, and his wife Rachel, who was daughter of Ariantye Cuvilye, and her husband Gulyn Vinge, her second husband being Jan Damen. From his mother he inherited a large share of the land between Wall street and Maiden lane. His wife Katharine was daughter of Claas Bording. The house and lot left to son Nicholas is now No. 95 Pearl street; The house and lot left to son Cornelius is on the east side of William street, 100 feet south of Maiden lane; The lots left to his daughter are next south of this. "Little Queen street" is now Cedar, "King street" is now Pine.

"Notes and Queries." In The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, v. 25, no. 2, April 1894, p. 98: VAN TIENHOVEN.--Dr. O'Callahan, in his "History of New Netherland," vol. ii, p. 322 (note), referring to the family of Lucas Van Tienhoven, of New York, surgeon, who died A.D. 1714, says that "he married Katharine Man, by whom he had six children."
There is an error in this statement. Katharine Man was his second wife. The baptismal records of the Dutch Church show that the mother of eight of the ten children of Dr. Van Tienhoven was his first wife, "Tryntie Bording," who was living as late as the year 1695, she and her husband appearing in that year as witnesses at several baptisms.
It seems that she was also the mother of his two children not mentioned in the list of baptisms, but whose names (Nicholas and Susanna) are given in his will. (See will, NYGBR, vol. XII, p. 50). [signed] J.O.B.

"Notes and Queries." In The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, v. 15, no. 1, Jan. 1881, p. 50: VAN TIENHOVEN (VAN THINEHOVEN).--Lucas Van Thinehoven, son of Cornelius Van Tienhoven and Rachel (Vigne) his wife, was a surgeon of repute in the city of New York. He left a will dated April 15, 1706. Proved April 30, 1714, and recorded in N. Y. Surrogate's office in Liber 8 of Wills, page 337. He names in his will his children Nicholas, Susannah, Cornelia, Sara, Elizabeth, Cornelius, and "the two children of my daughter Rachel decd by her husband John Dumartaer." Appoints his wife Katherine, his brother-in-law Adrian Man and his kinsman William Huddleston, executors.

Griffiths, G.R. Early ancestors in New Amsterdam Vigne--Rosenkrans. 1994. p. 7: The children of Cornelis Van Tienhoven and Rachel Vigne were: (Potts) [Thos. Potts. Our family ancestors. 1895. pp. 81-83] ... 4.2 Lucas Van Tienhoven, bapt. 17 Jan. 1649; mar. Tryntje Bording. He was included in a census of New York, East Ward, about 1703 (Doc,I,397) [Documentary History of New York] as follows: Lucas Tinhoven -- one male 16 to 60, one female, two female children.
He died in 1704. He became a prominent physician (Innes) [J.H. Innes. New Amsterdam and its people. v. 1-2. (1902) 1969.] and occupied the former residence of his father.

Murray, J.E. Bunnell and allied families. 1990. p. 79: Rachel Van Tienhoven, Cornelis's wife, remained in the house at No. 35 Pearl Street until her death. Rachel Van Tienhoven died in 1671 and the executors of her estate were Pieter Stoutenburg, her brother-in-law (husband of Cornelis' sister) and Jan Vigne, her brother. Son, Lucas, then fourteen years old, was cared for by his Uncle Pieter Stoutenburg after his mother's death. Lucas continued to live in the house at 35 Pearl Street. His sister lived at 37 Pearl Street. Rachel named her son, Lucas, as heir to her estate. On 1 July 1671, the executors and Lucas sold "Carman, a Certaine farm or Bowry" together with the dwelling house, barn, orchard, cornfield and pasture ground and other appurtenances on the island of Manhattan, property of Rachel, to John Smedes. This piece of property was probably on Maiden Lane near the property previously owned by Jan Jansen Damen, stepfather of Rachel.
While Cornelius Van Tienhoven was an abhorred man, his children grew up in New Amsterdam. His son, Lucas, became a doctor, and was a "surgeon of repute" in the city of New York. He lived on Smith Street below Maiden Lane in Harlem. He married Tryntje Bordingh ... They had at least seven children ...
In 1686, when Domine Henricus Selyn made a listing of his church members at the Dutch Reformed Church, he indicated that Lucas and Tryntje and other members lived on Langs Strant (Along the Shore) North side of Pearl Street and Hanover Square to Wall Street. Lucas' sister, Jannetje, and her husband, John Smit, lived just down the street.
Lucas inherited from his mother, Rachel, a large share of the land between Wall Street and Maiden Lane in New York city. In 1689 he was appointed one of three who inventoried the estate of Jan Vigne, his uncle, who died 21 December 1689. ...
Lucas died before April 1714. His will, dated 15 April 1706, proven in the court on 30 April 1714, is as follows:
      p. 80: In the name of God, Amen, the 15 April 1706. I, Luycas Van Tienhoven, of New York, surgeon, being weak in the body. I leave to my son, Nicholas Thienhoven, all that my house and lot, situate, and being in the city of New York, fronting to Dock street, bounded west by house an ground of Angeltie Burgers, north by Hendrick Ten Broeck, east by Christopher Beekman, south by the street. And he is to pay to my five daughters, Susannah, Cornelia, Sara, and Elizabeth, and the two daughters of Johanes Dumarteene (begotten of the body of my daughter Rachel), f280[sic?]. I leave to my son Cornelius Van Thienhoven, my house fronting to Smith street, in which I now dwell, with the lot of land on which it stands, being 28 feet front, and in length to the land of Colonel Stephen Van Cortlandt. And he is to pay to his sisters f40 [sic?]. I leave to my daughter Susannah a lot of land fronting to Little Queen street, to the west of Jacob Harse, 23 feet in front, and in length half the distance to King street. I leave to my daughter Elizabeth a lot next south of the lot given to my son Cornelius, 24 feet wide and same length. I leave to my daughter Cornelia a lot next south of the above, and of the same dimension. I leave to my daughter Sarah a lot of the same dimensions on the south side of the lot of Phillip Daillie. My wife Katherine is to have the use of all estate during her life. After payment of debts all the rest to children. i make my wife and son Nicholas, and my brother in law, Adrian Man, and my kinsman, William Huddlestone, executors, with full power to sell.
Witnesses, Joost Poldinck, Dirck Benson, Samuel Berrien. Proved April 30, 1714.
The house and lot which daughter, Cornelia, inherited was on the east side of William Street. Cornelia also received "legacies of clothing" from her sister-in-law, Mary, wife of Nicholas Van Tienhoven.

Derived partly by deed from executors of Rachel van Tienhoven, December 3, 1669 (Liber Deeds, B:163, in N.Y.
