Hook. Smith, Grant, and Irons families of New Jersey's shore counties. p. 7- : John Smith Family: John Smith 1 of Great Egg Harbor, N.J., Quaker, was born 17 Dec. 1700/01 and died 10 Jan. 1760. ... He came from Long Island, according to the Great Egg Harbor Friends Meeting Records, which records also gave the birth dates of his children as given below. This writer is indebted to Mrs. L. G. Rundstrom of Atlantic City, N.J. for the following account of this family.
"John Smith 1 of Hempstead, England, married Ruth David or Davids in 1630. John Smith 1 died on Long Island, N.Y. in 1700. They had a son John Smith 2, (John 1). He was born in 1633 and died on Long Island in 1720 and was called 'Jesstice or Justice John of Long Island'. He married first Elizabeth Gildersleeve in 1660. Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Smith died in New York in 1690. Justice John Smith married, secondly, in 1698, Elizabeth. This Elizabeth died in New Jersey (probably Egg Harbor) in 1740. John Smith's children by his first wife were, (1) James Smith 3 (2) Felix Smith 3 (3) Isaac Smith 3 (4) Ephraim Smith 3 (5) a daughter who married Mr. Farmer. By his second wife ... he had (6) John Smith 3, b. on Long Island 17 Dec. 1700 who married Mary Smith, born on Long Island in 1703, daughter of Noah Smith of Long Island. This above data is from the William Clevenger Collection of papers owned by the Atlantic County Historical Society. Mr. Clevenger states this information was given to him by Mr. B. F. Leeds in 1897. Mr. Leeds was a descendant of this Smith family. (See Higby Genealogy, p. 41)"
The above family apparently is the same as the one shown in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. 72, p. 8 ...
Children of John and Mary Smith (Great Egg Harbor Friends Records) [note by LSF: Hook translates the Quaker records' dates incorrectly: e.g., the GEHF records say that John Smith was "b. 17th da, 12th mo, 1700" and Hook translates this as Dec. 17, 1700/01; Quaker dating sources say this should be: Feb. 17, 1700/01 because December is 10th mo and February is 12th mo and March is 1st mo]:
      (1) Elizabeth Smith 2, b 6 Dec. 1720/21 [LSF correction from Barbara Epler Wright's Early Church Records of Atlantic & Cape May Counties, N.J. p. 4: Elizabeth Smith, b. 6th da, 12th mo, 1720/21]

Salter, E. A History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, embracing a genealogical record of earliest settlers in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and their descendants ... 1890. p. liv: SMITH. -- ... John Smith was also awarded a share of land 1667, and given town lot number 5, in Middletown. In 1687, John Smith and wife Mary sold land to Richard Hartshorne; also 100 acres to Eleazar Cottrell; in 1705, he sold land to John Pierce; in 1713, to Jacob Truax. His will, it is said, was dated Dec. 29th, 1714, and mentions seven children. [LSF note: not sure of identification]
